Art Galleries in Adelaide
Visit our city of art and culture...

Adelaide’s reputation as a city of art and culture owes much to the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Founded in 1881, its home is one of the city’s most significant heritage buildings and holds the world’s finest collection of 19th-century Australian art. Don’t miss the superb collections of Islamic, Asian and European art too, plus excellent temporary exhibitions.
Take centre stage on a tour of the Adelaide Festival Centre, one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most versatile and vibrant art spaces. The Centre’s public art collection is superb, extensive and free to view and there are excellent family activities here too.
The Jam Factory Contemporary Art & Design Centre is Australia’s leading centre for the design, production, exhibition and sale of work by emerging and established Australian craft designers. Visitors can watch artists in action, building furniture, blowing glass or turning ceramics, wander through the exhibitions of contemporary craft, and pick up an original work of art.
State Library
Take time out to inspect the wonderful Treasures Wall at the State Library of South Australia.
The library mixes treasures with pleasures in equal number. The library is one of the landmark cultural institutions of South Australia and the world centre for South Australia’s documentary heritage. It is located in the heart of the city in the North Terrace Cultural Precinct and open seven days a week.
The library combines the new and the old, with award winning Catherine Helen Spence Wing with its iconic glass foyer flanked by the 19th century splendour and charm of the Mortlock Wing and the Institute Building.
The Library has several exhibition areas showing unique items from State Library collections.
Performing Arts
The Adelaide Entertainment Centre in Hindmarsh and the three theatres of the Adelaide Festival Centre host all manner of performing arts. Her Majesty’s Theatre, Adelaide Town Hall and the Lion Arts Centre are used by South Australian opera, theatre and contemporary dance companies as well as visiting and touring arts companies. Networks of smaller venues in the suburbs host a great range of companies and performances.
The Adelaide Festival Centre is home to three annual festivals – the Adelaide Cabaret Festival (June), OzAsia Festival (August/September) and Adelaide International Guitar Festival (November/December), which attract thousands of local, national and international visitors each year.
Aboriginal Arts & Culture
If you want to immerse yourself in South Australia’s rich arts and culture, stroll along North Terrace. It’s known as Adelaide’s “cultural boulevard” and is home to many great collections.
Nearby, you’ll find the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute in Grenfell Street. It’s Australia’s longest running Aboriginal-owned and managed multi-arts centre. New Indigenous art exhibitions open in Tandanya’s cathedral-like main gallery and other spaces every six to eight weeks.
From Tandanya it’s an easy walk to the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery in The South Australian Museum. This gallery comprises some 3,000 items on two levels in a contemporary, interactive setting and is the most comprehensive Aboriginal cultural exhibition in the world today.
The Don Bradman Collection
Sir Donald Bradman was the greatest batsman in the history of cricket.
The Bradman Collection, at the Adelaide Oval, brings together his priceless and personal collection of cricket memorabilia spanning from 1927 to 1977.
It’s a world-class exhibition dedicated to an Australian legend and international hero who made Adelaide his home.
Watch footage of Bradman in the theatrette, test your own skills with the interactive museum, and browse through personal items including cricket bats, balls, trophies, items of clothing and more.
