Burra Heritage Passport Trail

This former copper-mining settlement is one of the most beautifully preserved towns in South Australia, listed on the National Estate Register and also declared a State Heritage Area.
It all began in 1845 with the discovery of copper by two shepherds: Thomas Pickett and William Streair. Miners from around Australia and the world flocked to the place and townships named after their homelands sprung up - Kooringa, Redruth, Aberdeen, Llywchwr and Hampton. By 1851, the settlement now collectively known as Burra had a population of 5,000, second only to Adelaide’s 18,000.
A great way to explore the town today is with Burra’s Heritage Passport Trail. With your own guidebook and key, you can drive around and visit 65 fascinating sites all within 11 km, including Redruth Gaol, the Monster Mine and “Creek Street” - where 1,600 people lived in dugouts along the riverbank.
Burra is also a great place to look for antiques. And don’t miss Thorogoods of Burra (a boutique cider brewery) and the Burra Art Gallery. You’ll also find walking trails, a golf club, bike hire, accommodation and more.
