Clare Valley

Wine and Food...

Historic Sevenhill Cellars, Clare Valley, South Australia

Regarded as one of the world’s most picturesque wine regions, the Clare Valley lies just ninety minutes drive north of Adelaide.

Clare Valley is a place where ‘wine and food’ mean people. It’s a region with a warm, rustic flavour - and a world-beating wine-list. The likes of Robert Parker and Bob Campbell know the Rieslings of Clare Valley pretty well. Simply put, they are some of the best in the world. And, while they’ve travelled well across the oceans, nothing beats tasting them in their own back yard.

There are about 30 wineries in the region, most of them small and family-owned, and all manner of ways to explore them. As well as the Valley’s knockout Rieslings, you’ll find some very fine examples of other varietals, including great Cabernets and Shiraz.

There are countless ways to experience and enjoy Clare Valley’s wines, including an amazing journey called the Riesling Trail. You can explore its 27 km on foot or by bike, but it really is a must-do.

Great wine, of course, has its natural partner in gourmet food, and Clare Valley is just as passionate about its produce as its wines. This is a place where terms like ‘organic’ and ‘grain-fed’ aren’t just marketing labels, but your guarantee of good old-fashioned taste. Try it for yourself at one of the Valley’s vineyard restaurants, in a country café or on a picnic.

There’s a surprising range of foods that have been grown, farmed or produced in the region, from free-range chickens to chutney, carob to cod, saltbush hogget to organic lamb. You’ll see it available in shops, cellar doors, farm outlets, cafes and restaurants.

Best Riesling in the world?

Some do say. And they’re not just from round these parts. Clare Valley winery Kilikanoon has won the trophy for the best Riesling (2006 Mort’s Block Riesling) in the world at the International Wine and Spirits Competition. And Kilikanoon is just one of the leading wineries that calls the Clare Valley home.

As Australian wine regions go, Clare Valley is small, accounting for around 2.5 per cent of the nation’s crush. But you’ll find its boutique wines in the world’s top restaurants.

As well as its standout Rieslings, the region’s winemakers turn out many other excellent varietals, including some first-rank Cabernets and Shiraz.
