Whyalla Maritime Museum

Whyalla Maritime Museum will immerse you in a world of shipbuilding for HM Australian Ships, for the mining giant of Broken Hill Propriety (BHP) and the maritime and natural history of the upper Spencer Gulf.
Its prime exhibit, HMAS Whyalla, the first modern warship built in South Australia (in 1941) stands on dry land, two kilometres from the sea.
The collection documents the area’s diverse marine life including sharks, stingrays, seahorses, sea dragons, blue ring octopuses and more. Plus the 1814 edition of Matthew Flinders’ journals and collections of items recovered from shipwrecks.
The Singing to the Sharks exhibition documents the indigenous Aboriginal peoples of the area and their connection with the sea. One of the oldest South Australian wooden fishing vessels, Valkyrie, and a shark cage can be seen in the museum garden.
