Wine tasting

Dyson Wines, Maslin Beach, Fleurieu Peninsula

With the likes of McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek on the doorstep, a bit of wine exploration never goes amiss on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Together with Currency Creek and Southern Fleurieu, this region produces some of Australia’s top drops.

There’s often something happening in the region. Enjoy tastings with a winemaker, jazz or food and wine festivals, art exhibitions or cooking classes or sample both local cheeses and great wines along the leisurely Cheese and Wine Trail. A visit to Fleurieu Peninsula’s cellar doors isn’t just about quaffing award-winning Shiraz, Grenache, Cab Sav and Chardonnay. You can meet the people behind the labels and learn more about what makes this part of the wine world so special.

McLaren Vale stretches from the hills to the ocean, and has a worldwide reputation for outstanding Shiraz. It also produces an astonishing range of high quality wines from other varietals. The first vines were planted by John Reynell in 1838 and, by 1850, the well-known Hardy and Seaview wineries were in operation.

Today, the region boasts over 70 cellar doors and they range from historic to a glimpse of the future.  For a sense of the area’s rich winemaking history, visit Pirramimma, Chapel Hill or Hardy’s Tintara wineries.

For a contemporary experience, visit Primo Estate, d’Arenbergs, Penny’s Hill, Hugh Hamilton, Leconfield or Hugo. Other names to look for include Serafino, Samuel’s Gorge, Anvers, Pertaringa, Rosemount and Shottesbrooke. About 270 independent grape growers can also be found here.

The main street of McLaren Vale is a charming showcase of cellar doors, local produce, art and craft stores, cafes and more.
