Coober Pedy & The Painted Hills

In the opal-mining outpost of Coober Pedy, 4,000 residents from 50 countries have made an art form of all things quirky.
You’ll find half of the population living underground to escape the lofty temperatures. Only in Coober Pedy will you find an underground swimming pool, an underground church and a golf course without a blade of grass.
Coober Pedy produces most of the world’s opals with opal fields covering an area of 4,954 square kilometres. You can try your luck at “noodling” (fossicking) at various spots around town, get an insight into the history of Coober Pedy at the Old Timers Mine and Museum or learn how the locals live (many of them underground) on a guided tour of the town.
The annual Coober Pedy Opal Festival is held on Easter Saturday and features a range of events from the fun to the outrageous.
There’s also a host of awesome natural landscapes surrounding Coober Pedy where many famous films including “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome” have been set.
The Anna Creek Painted Hills are a particularly spectacular and recent discovery in the far north of South Australia, near Coober Pedy.
This magnificently coloured outcrop of large and small hills emerges suddenly out of a flat, desert landscape. Mineral deposits, such as iron and manganese were left by ancient inland rivers dissolving into the soils and rocks. This has resulted in hills of rich reds, ochred yellows and whites.
In an effort to preserve the striking but fragile rock formations from foot or vehicle damage, access to the area is limited however, scenic flights provide access to these spectacularly beautiful and stunning landscapes.
