Flinders Ranges & Wilpena Pound

Moonarie Gap, Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges National Park, South Australia

A trip to the 800 million year old quartzite and limestone outcrop that is the Flinders Ranges is an unforgettable experience.

Renowned for its rugged mountain ranges, spectacular gorges, creeks lined with Red River Gums, and abundant wildlife, there are many walking trails to explore, including a section of South Australia’s longest walking trail – the Heysen Trail.

The Flinders Ranges is also recognised worldwide for its Aboriginal rock art sites, ancient geological history, impressive fossils and well-preserved heritage. The Brachina Gorge Geological Trail traces the geological history of the area.

The jewel of the Flinders Ranges is Wilpena Pound. It’s huge “crater rim” rising out of the plains is edged with dramatic jagged ramparts, and features plunging gorges and bush forests. This magnificent natural amphitheatre has strong significance to the Indigenous Adnyamthanha people.

In 2007 the Adnyamthanha donated a new large public artwork called Ikara (Aboriginal name for “meeting place”) as a tribute to their people’s contribution to pastoralism in the area. The artwork is part of the “Living With Land” trail at Old Wilpena Station, the best-preserved pastoral heritage site in Australia.

Other hiking highlights in the area include St Mary’s Peak, Malloga Falls and the Hill Family Homestead.

The first port of call for most people at Wilpena Pound is the multiple-award winning Wilpena Pound Resort. It is the location of the area’s Visitor Centre, and scenic flights and 4WD tours can be booked here.

A great way to see the vastness of Wilpena Pound (17km long and 7km wide) is from the air and scenic flights operate daily.
