Lake Eyre

If you’re looking for a real Outback adventure, Lake Eyre is the place.
Huge and remote, this vast expanse of shimmering white salt plain is matched in intensity only by the impossibly blue desert sky.
Covering an area of 9,690 square kilometres,it is one of the largest internal drainage systems in the world but has only filled to capacity three times in the past 150 years.
It partially fills an average of every eight years, turning the lake into a birdwatchers’ paradise. If you are lucky enough to visit at this time, you might see flocks of Australian Pelicans, Banded Stilts, ducks and waders. How these birds know the desert is flooded remains a mystery.
The best time to visit is between April and October.
