3 day Self Drive Itinerary
Day 1
To reach Kangaroo Island, take the Sealink ferry from Cape Jervis, around 90 minutes drive south of Adelaide. If taking your own car, allow a leisurely two to three hours to get to Cape Jervis as you may be tempted to stop in McLaren Vale for some wine tasting on the way!
Alternatively you can catch a Sealink coach from the city or fly into Kingscote and hire a car on the Island. Either way you’ll need to book in advance.
The Sealink ferry docks at Penneshaw, which is the closest point to the mainland.
Seal Bay
From Penneshaw head to Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park. Murray Lagoon, in the northern part of the park, is excellent for birdwatchers. From here head to Seal Bay and stroll along the beach with the sea lions (accompanied by a National Park Guide) as they rest, play and recuperate after days of feeding at sea.
Further along the South Coast Road is Little Sahara. This strange phenomenon looms out of the bushland with a line of stunning white dunes, followed by another and another, with no sign of the sea.
Further along the coast, Vivonne Bay is hailed as Australia’s best beach. Named by French explorer, Nicholas Baudin in 1803, Vivonne Bay has a beautiful harbour, jetty, boat ramp and great surfing and fishing.
Kelly Hill Caves were discovered in 1885 and today underground tours are run by National Parks and Wildlife SA. Adventure caving is available by arrangement. We suggest you spend the night in the Rocky River area, ready for a day discovering the Flinders Chase National Park.

Day 2
At 74,000 hectares, Flinders Chase National Park is one of Australia’s largest reserve areas. It’s considered one of the state’s most significant conservation sites because of its natural wildlife and lack of introduced predators. It’s an area rich in native wildlife, and koalas can regularly be seen dozing in the treetops. The platypus walkway provides a chance to look for these elusive creatures.
Remarkable Rocks
From Rocky River take the road south to Cape du Couedic and view the lighthouse constructed in 1909. Take the walkway down to Admiral’s Arch, home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals. Back in the car, head for Remarkable Rocks, a cluster of huge weather-sculpted granite boulders perched on a dome that plunges 75 metres to the sea.
From here head to Parndana in the centre of the island. Kangaroo Island’s unpolluted environment means there are some wonderful boutique food producers, and many can be found around this part of the Island. First stop is the Island Pure Sheep Dairy, 40 kilometres from Parndana towards Kingscote. Visitors can watch the milking, help feed the lambs and sample its range of award winning cheeses. The nearby Gum Creek Marron Farm is also worth a visit with tours and meals available.
Tonight stay in Kingscote or return to Penneshaw to see the nightly parade of fairy penguins as they come ashore at dusk. Travelling back to Penneshaw visit the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery and if time allows the Cliffords Honey farm to taste some of the most delicious honey in the world.
Rocky River - Kingscote via Parndana: 102km/1 hour 15 minutes
Rocky River - Penneshaw via Parndana: 150km/1 hour 30 minutes
Day 3
This morning drive southwest along the coast and take a walk along one of the beautiful beaches or travel to the most easterly point of the island to Cape Willoughby where South Australia’s first lighthouse commenced operation in 1852.
Wine is a new industry on the Island, and the newest vintages can be sampled at Sunset Winery, the only cellar door on the island. Located just outside of Penneshaw, enjoy a glass of wine and regional produce while taking in the stunning views of the island and coast.
Catch the late afternoon ferry from Penneshaw back to Cape Jervis. From here it’s a comfortable drive back to Adelaide.
Kingscote - Penneshaw: 58km/45 minutes
Penneshaw - Cape Willoughby: 30km/30 minutes
For those with more time, take in some of the island’s most dramatic coastline and secluded beaches along the north coast. From Cygnet River head to Cape Borda with its lonely lighthouse, then travel back to Kingscote on North Coast Road to Western River Cove, Stokes Bay and Emu Bay.
Kingscote - Cape Borda via Playford Highway: 103km/1 hour 30 minutes
Cape Borda - Kingscote via North Coast Rd: 135 km/2 hours
