Water Activities

Beaches
Kangaroo Island’s shoreline is dotted with some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches - long stretches of golden sand that you will frequently have all to yourself!
Imagine being on a beach that quite literally has no footprints other than those left by the Little Penguins returning to roost.
Vivonne Bay, on the South Coast, was recently named Australia’s best beach by the Sydney University Marine Studies Centre.
Beaches along the north coast of the island are the safest for swimming, and include Emu Bay and Browns Beach.
Stokes Bay, offers an unusual walk through a headland of boulders to a white sandy beach surrounded by cliffs. A large rock-enclosed pool provides protection from the surf, making this a safe swimming spot for the whole family.
Island Diving
Kangaroo Island offers some of the best temperate water diving in Australia.
There are colourful underwater coral cliffs and rocky reefs where undisturbed marine ecosystems can be observed.
The underwater life is vivid and the unpolluted waters team with fish such as the Blue Devil, Harlequin, Truncate Coral Fish and the elusive Leafy Sea Dragon.
There are more than 80 shipwrecks scattered around the island, many of them lying just off the beaches.
Surfing
Kangaroo Island surfing is a well-kept secret, prized for the quality and quantity of uncrowded surf-breaks.
Stokes Bay and Vivonne Bay are suitable for beginners, however beach breaks can often produce quality waves for intermediate surfers.
There are numerous surfing spots on the Island for experienced surfers and most are accessible by car – Hanson Bay in the south west and D’Estrees Bay in the East.
Fishing
Whether you want to dangle a line from a jetty, cast off from one of the numerous beaches, or charter a deep-sea boat, Kangaroo Island will surrender some of the finest eating and game fish in southern waters.
Look forward to landing the fabled King George Whiting, and, if you’re sailing into deeper water – Trevally, Snapper and the world’s biggest Samson Fish.
