Wine & Food Tasting

Great wine, McLaren Vale, South Australia

McLaren Vale stretches from the hills to the ocean, and produces world famous wines. Rich in heritage, the Vale also keeps its eye firmly on the future.

Contemporary cellar doors stand alongside boutique, stone wineries while traditional red wine grape varieties grow alongside emerging styles such as nebbiolo, sangiovese, moscato, and tempranillo.

With countless international medals and trophies, including two Jimmy Watson’s (Australia’s most sought-after wine award), McLaren Vale winemakers know how to make seriously good wine.

John Reynell planted the region’s first grapes in 1838, employing a young labourer named Thomas Hardy and laying the foundations for two dynasties that would dominate the region for more than a century. You can check out John Reynell’s original hand-excavated cellar in use in the gardens of Hardy’s Reynella winery.

Today the region boasts over 70 cellar doors. For a glimpse of the area’s rich history, visit Pirramimma, Chapel Hill or Hardy’s Tintara wineries or for a contemporary experience, visit Primo Estate, d’Arenberg, Penny’s Hill, Hugh Hamilton, Leconfield and Hugo. Other names to look for include, Serafino, Samuels Gorge, Anvers, Pertaringa, Rosemount, Wirra Wirra and Shottesbrooke. About 270 independent grape growers can also be found here.

Many cellar doors have eateries that showcase regional produce, such as cheeses, olives and dukkah, while seafood caught in nearby waters is available in many winery restaurants. Look out for King George whiting, garfish, tommy ruffs and mulloway, squid, crayfish or local crabs.
