The people of Coober Pedy are as colourful as the opals that make this town famous. Half the population lives in underground dugouts to escape searing temperatures in summer. Only in Coober Pedy will you find an underground church, an underground swimming pool and a golf course without a blade of grass.
Coober Pedy’s opal fields cover an area of almost 5000 square kilometers and produce 80 per cent of the world’s opals. Take a tour of an opal mine, try your hand at “noodling” for opals, or simply buy up big at more than 30 shops. The annual Coober Pedy Opal Festival is held on Easter Saturday and features a range of events from the fun to the outrageous!
Coober Pedy is located 9 hours drive north of Adelaide or a 2 hour flight with REX Airlines. At least a 2 night stay in Coober Pedy is recommended as there is so much to see and do in and around the township. A range of accommodation options are available including:
