What’s On in South Australia
January to March
January
Tour Down Under, held annually
The Tour Down Under is now the first stop on the UCI Pro Tour world cycling calendar. It consists of six stages taking place both in Adelaide and the surrounding regions. The 2011 event will be held between 16 - 23 January 2011.
Crush, held annually
The Adelaide Hills come alive as local wine producers team up with quality restaurants to exhibit and sell their wares, just 20 minutes drive from Adelaide.
Kangaroo Island Gourmet Gallop, held annually
A celebration of Kangaroo Island food and wine, including its superb local cheeses, honey and olive oil. There’s also bands and entertainment for the kids - plus a fantastic day of horse racing.
Tunarama, held annually
See Port Lincoln, the Eyre Peninsula‘s main township’s foreshore transform into a bustling alley of stalls, sideshows and rides - with fun events, activities and competitions, including the famous John West Tuna Toss Competition.
February
Adelaide Film Festival, held annually
An unmissable international film festival.
Adelaide Fringe, held annually
Renowned for fresh ideas, risk, imagination, spontaneity and fun. The Fringe has grown into the biggest arts festival in Australia. On a worldwide scale it is eclipsed only by the Edinburgh Festival.
Adelaide Festival of the Arts, held biennially
One of the world’s greatest art festivals featuring opera, theatre, dance, music, cabaret, outdoor entertainment, visual arts exhibitions, master classes and incorporating Adelaide Writers’ Week (the largest literary festival in the world).
Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival, held annually
The pinnacle event on the Kangaroo Island event calendar. Fabulous fashion, great food and wine and some great horse racing.
Australian Mountain Bike Championships,
Held at Eagle Park in the Adelaide Hills, the Australian Mountain Bike Championships will be where the nation’s best mountain bike riders compete for the national title. The event will be held between 22 – 27 February 2011.
South Australian Wooden Boat and Music Festival, held biennially
This Festival offers three days of exciting festivities both on water and land, featuring more than 250 wooden boats of all shapes and sizes. Held in Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The next event will be held between 26 - 27 February 2011.
March
Adelaide Fringe, held annually
Renowned for fresh ideas, risk, imagination, spontaneity and fun. The Fringe has grown into the biggest arts festival in Australia. On a worldwide scale it is eclipsed only by the Edinburgh Festival.
Adelaide Festival of the Arts, held biennially
One of the world’s greatest art festivals featuring opera, theatre, dance, music, cabaret, outdoor entertainment, visual arts exhibitions, master classes and incorporating Adelaide Writers’ Week (the largest literary festival in the world).
WOMADelaide, held annually
Adelaide’s beautiful Botanic Garden is the venue for WOMADelaide – it’s a true celebration of world music. For four magical days and nights the park will host some of the planet’s most extraordinary musicians, dancers and singers.
Clipsal 500 Adelaide, held annually
The showcase event of the V8 Supercar Championship Series calendar. Concerts are held in the evening featuring a fantastic line-up of performers. The dates for the 2011 Clipsal 500 Adelaide will be announced in September 2010.
Adelaide Cup, held annually
Held at Morphettville Racecourse, 10km from the CBD, Adelaide Cup is one of the biggest events of the year for many people in South Australia. It is a social event in Adelaide that attracts horse racing enthusiasts and socialites alike. Those involved in the horse racing industry, including horse owners, trainers and jockeys, participate for prize money that is awarded to winning horses on the day.
Barossa Under the Stars, held annually
An amazing concert under the starts, in one of the world’s most famous wine regions.
April to June
April
International Rugby Sevens, held annually
There’s just about no faster sport on the planet than Rugby Sevens. See the All Blacks take on Sevens rivals from around the world over three days at the Adelaide Oval – catch it if you can!
Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival, held annually
This Horse Racing Carnival attracts more than 110,000 racing enthusiasts to the Adelaide Hills‘ town of Oakbank. Spectators soak up an exciting weekend of steeplechase and hurdling, plus all the colour of trackside festivities.
Stirling Autumn Garden Festival, held annually
Some of Stirling’s oldest and most famous private gardens, including Boxwell Gardens open to the public as part of the Stirling Autumn Garden Festival, just 30 minutes drive from the centre of Adelaide.
Barossa Vintage Festival, held biennially
This is Australia’s best known and longest running wine festival. Over 100 music, food and cultural events celebrate the vintage. The next event will be between 23 April - 1 May 2011.
Music on the Murray, held biennially
Held on Waikerie’s Murray River foreshore. The program includes the Adelaide Philharmonic Choir, South Australian Police Band, Adelaide Arts Orchestra and more.
Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, held biennially
The Fleurieu Peninsula’s Leafy Sea Dragon Festival is a major regional festival that celebrates the arts, culture, community and environment and contributes to the future health and viability of the Leafy Sea Dragon and its habitat.
Penola Cup Day, held annually
A fun way for the whole family to spend Easter Sunday in the heart of the Coonawarra wine region with live bands, fashion parades, rides and family entertainment, as well a great line up of horse races.
Coonawarra After Dark, held annually
Visit the Coonawarra wine region during the grape harvest to see, hear, touch, celebrate and learn about all the hard work and passion that goes into making great wines.
Onesteel Fishy Fringe Festival, held annually
The One Steel Fishy Fringe Festival combines art, music, cabaret, hip hop and dance into a fantastic family festival in the seaside town of Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula.
Rock the Mount, held annually
Melrose, in the Southern Flinders Ranges, becomes centre stage for the hottest names in Australian Country Music. Buskers, a ute muster, markets stalls and a line up of Australia’s best country music stars.

Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival, held annually
This festival celebrates the literary and arts heritage of Penola, fine wines of the Coonawarra wine region and premium regional produce.
Millicent Cup Day at Penola, held annually
This is South Australia’s richest country horse race meeting. This event is sure to be a great day of horse racing mixed with live music, fashion parades and lots of socialising.
Kernewek Lowender Cornish Festival, held biennially
The world’s largest Cornish festival that celebrates the heritage of the region. Held in Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo on the Yorke Peninsula. The 2011 event will be held 11-17 May.
June
South Australian Country Music Festival & Awards, held annually
Held in Barmera on the Murray River, these are the biggest and most prestigious country music awards in South Australia. The 2011 event will be held between 3-13 June.
Adelaide Cabaret Festival, held annually
Offers the best international and local artists in the cabaret genre with classic and contemporary cabaret performances.
McLaren Vale Sea and Vines Festival, held annually
The region’s wineries combine their talents with chefs from South Australia’s best restaurants to celebrate the McLaren River‘s fine wine and sumptuous seafood.
July to September

Adelaide Festival of Ideas, held biennially
This event will surprise and provoke, inspiring you to ponder various ideas, themes and
questions.
Whaletime Playtime Festival, held annually
Located in a href=“http://http://www.whaletimeplaytimefestival.com.au” title=“Victor Harbor”>Victor Harbour and coinciding with the opening of the whale watching season, the Festival creates an exciting atmosphere for children aged between three and ten with performances by South Australian children’s artists.
Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers, held annually
Coonawarra wine region’s cellar doors showcase back vintage wines from their range, available for tasting and sale.
Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive, 30 July – 29 August 2010
The Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive is the ultimate Outback holiday. Climb into the saddle and help herd cattle along one of Australia’s most evocative stock trails.
August
Barossa Gourmet Weekend, held annually
Enjoy the finest wines from cellar doors throughout the region, matched with sumptuous food and some of South Australia’s best live entertainment and all just over one hour’s drive from Adelaide. The event will be held between 20 - 21 August 2010.
Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive, 30 July – 29 August 2010
The Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive is the ultimate Outback holiday. Climb into the saddle and help herd cattle along one of Australia’s most evocative stock trails.
September
Royal Adelaide Show, held annually
A popular agricultural and entertainment event, featuring livestock, produce, handicrafts, rides, fireworks, sideshows, arena events, showbags and much more.
City to Bay Fun Run, held annually
A very popular, annual fun run from Adelaide to the beachside town of Glenelg. Join in the festivities by walking or running in this famous Adelaide event. The fun run will be held on 19 September 2010.
Bay to Birdwood Classic, held annually
One of the world’s historic motoring events, the Bay to Birdwood Classic features vehicles manufactured after 1955, but at least 30 years old. The event will be held on 26 September 2010.
Australian International Pedal Prix, held annually
Located at Murray Bridge on the banks of the Murray River, teams test human powered vehicles that - predominantly - they have designed and constructed themselves.
October to December
October
Riverland Renaissance Festival, held annually
Located in Berri, this event includes day and twilight cruises on the Murray River, banquet lunches, bush opera, wine shows, twilight dinners, cooking demonstrations, concerts and more.
Semaphore Music Festival Festival, held annually
Soak up the sun and enjoy South Australian and interstate live, alternative country, blues and roots bands in the seaside area of Semaphore. A 30 minute drive from the Adelaide CBD, the perfect event to top off any South Australian visit. The event will be held between 1 - 4 October 2010.
Ceduna Oysterfest, held annually
The town of Ceduna on the Eyre Peninsula comes alive for its annual Oysterfest, a weekend of entertainment, fine food and fun.
World Solar Challenge, held biennially
The ultimate challenge in sustainable energy. Participants must design and build a car capable of crossing the vast and imposing continent of Australia, using only sunlight as fuel. The proposed dates for the next event is 16 - 23 October 2011.
November
Feast Festival, held annually
Adelaide’s annual lesbian and gay cultural festival featuring a program of theatre, concerts, film, exhibitions and parties. Held between 13 - 28 November 2010.
Credit Union Christmas Pageant, held annually
Join the thousands of locals who line the 3.3 kilometre Adelaide street route to watch this famous parade involving festive and fairytale floats, marching bands, and over 900 costumed characters. The event will be held on 13 November 2010.
December
The Ashes - Adelaide Test, 3 - 7 December 2010
With St Peter’s Anglican Cathedral in the background and nestled among the gardens and trees of North Adelaide, the Adelaide Oval is regarded as one of the most aesthetically pleasing test grounds in world cricket. The Australia v England event is a must see.
