Getting to South Australia By Road

Enjoy the freedom of the road

South Australia is fully connected to the national system of roads from all the state capitals. It’s a great way to travel, you can go at your own pace and stop off when you feel like it. Almost all of South Australia’s regions are within very easy reach of Adelaide, which makes exploring easy and rewarding.

By Coach

All interstate and regional coaches arrive at and depart from the Central Bus Station at 85 Franklin St, Adelaide.

Greyhound Coaches has connections to Adelaide from the major Australian cities and offers travel passes designed for independent travel.

Firefly Express also operates services from Melbourne and Sydney to Adelaide.

Premier Stateliner offers a comprehensive half and full day tour program, plus a range of overnight tours to major South Australian regional tourist destinations.

By Car

With its central position on the continent of Australia, South Australia is a great self-drive destination from or to interstate cities. The Great Ocean Road that links South Australia with Victoria is one of the world’s great coastal drives. You have the freedom to explore at your own pace. Set aside four nights to get the most out of your experience.

Car Hire

All major car rental companies have depots in Adelaide, as do smaller, local companies, and provide a range of vehicles for hire from both city and airport depots. A current driver’s licence and a deposit or credit card imprint are needed. The minimum age requirement varies between 21 and 25 years depending on the company and vehicle type. Both International Driving Permits and foreign licences are recognised, however foreign licences not written in English need to be accompanied by an English translation.

Please Note

- All Australian vehicles are right-hand drive. Remember to drive on the LEFT side of the road.
- Road distances are measured in kilometres (km) and speeds in kilometres per hour (km/h).
- Speed limits vary. In South Australia 100km/h is permitted on open roads in country areas and between 40-60km/h in towns and metropolitan areas. Watch for speed signs to be sure.
- There are tough penalties for drinking and driving.
- It is illegal to use your mobile phone while driving.
